The Screening Test Review Committee (STRC) develops evidence-based recommendations on the appropriate use of screening tests in Singapore, serving as
professional guidance to healthcare professionals. The last report of the STRC’s was published in 2019. Now, they have published an updated report, which will be covered here.
Category 3 Tests
As a recap, Category 3 tests are not recommended for health screening. This is because there is insufficient evidence to make a decision regarding the usefulness of the test. For some of these tests, there is also good evidence that the screening test is
not effective, or that the net harm outweighs benefits.

- Body fat measurement is not a recommended screening test for obesity.

- Serum calcium, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and serum phosphate are not recommended tests to screen for osteoporosis.

- The above tests are all not recommended to screen for breast, colorectal or lung cancer.

- Abdominal X-ray and chest x-ray are not recommended to screen for colorectal cancer and lung cancer respectively.
- Ultrasound breast is not recommended to screen for breast cancer.
- Calcaneum ultrasound scan is not recommended to screen for osteoporosis.
- CT scan of the abdomen is not recommended to screen for colorectal cancer.
Conclusion
Health screenings are an essential part of preventive care, but it’s crucial to approach them thoughtfully. Not all tests are suitable for everyone, and unnecessary screenings can lead to stress and additional medical interventions that may not be needed.
Always consult with your healthcare provider about which screenings are appropriate based on your individual health profile and family history. Remember, being informed is key to making the best decisions for your health!
