Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

Your may have been diagnosed with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV when you visited your doctor with giddiness. Here is a breakdown of what the acronym means:

  • Benign: Not caused by a serious or cancerous condition
  • Paroxysmal: Recurring
  • Positional: Triggered by certain positions
  • Vertigo: Giddiness with a spinning sensation

It is thought to be due to inner ear crystals being dislodged into the wrong position in the inner ear canals.

Once you are diagnosed with BPPV by a doctor, there is actually an exercise you can do at home on your bed to try to get the dislodged crystals back into their rightful position, called the Home Epley Maneuver, as shown in the video below.

NOTE: This exercise is meant for those who have already seen a doctor and been diagnosed with BPPV. Your doctor will tell you which side to perform the Home Epley Maneuver on and how frequent to do it. Please see your doctor first for a full evaluation if you are experiencing vertigo.

I like that the video contains a inner ear model showing how the different positions of the exercise can help bring the crystals back to their rightful position.

Please also see a doctor immediately if you have the following symptoms that are not associated with a true BPPV:

  • A new, different or severe headache
  • A fever
  • Double vision or loss of vision
  • Hearing loss
  • Trouble speaking
  • Leg or arm weakness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Falling or difficulty walking
  • Numbness or tingling
